Tributes have today poured in euologising Congolese singer and songwriter Mose Se Sengo (Fan Fan) famed for his hit song Papa Lolo.
The guitar strings of the popular Soukous maestro plucked melody from the wind for the last time on Friday, May 3, after he suffered a heart attack in an apartment located along Thika superhighway.
According to producer Tabu Musa, the 75-year-old was on a recording tour in Nairobi.
Born in October 16, 1945, in Kinshasa, Zaire, the talented Mose Se Sengo was spotted by Rhumba maestro Franco Luambo Makiadi while playing for the band Revolution as a featured guitarist.
All Music reports that he stayed with Franco’s legendary OK Jazz for several years before leaving with other musicians to form Orchestre Somo Somo where they belted out the hit song, Djamelasi.
Orchestre Somo Somo was, however, hit by misfortune after band member Youlou Mabiala – a member he moved out of OK Jazz with – was injured in a car crash.
The unfortunate reality forced Mose Se Sengo to return to OK Jazz but left again after deciding to revive, and branch Orchestre Somo Somo out into Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania.
He stayed in the latter for over five years where he treated his fans with a new sound courtesy of work with Orchestre Makassy.
His stint in Kenya resulted in Mose Se Sengo flying to London, UK, where he was offered a contract by Stern’s Records courtesy of an invitation by Robin Scott.
The deal saw him record two albums before Orchestre Somo Somo went under once again.
Following the collapse of his band, he produced another album with Bana OK before working for six months as a civil servant with the Royal Army Medical Corps.
He had several albums in his belt including Hello Hello, Bayekeleye and Musicatelama.
