Kenyan football kings Gor must now conquer Africa

For the 18th time we are the Kenyan champions, and we are not going to brag because it is now becoming our culture, to win.

I have heard from several quarters that the Kenyan Premier League is becoming boring because Gor Mahia keeps winning the title year in year out.

But very few realise that we actually stayed 18 years without winning the league title. A whole 18 years of drought, pain and tears. We were actually nearly relegated during that period, thanks to God and the fact that we are Sirkal, the husband of teams we remained in the league.

What other teams do not realise that if we had beaten Thika United on the final day in 2o12, we would have won the league. For good measure, we won it the three succeeding years. At the same time had we not been docked three points in 2016 after the controversial game with Tusker we would have won the title that season. Simply, Gor Mahia would have won the KPL title since 2012 to date.

But that is not what I am driving at. We must accept that we have no equals locally, once upon a time, our noisy neighbours AFC Leopards were our main opponents, they got relegated and since then, they are today a mid table side struggling to become relevant in a league that has become ours for the taking every season.

Then there was Sofapaka who have fizzled out after winning the title n their debut. We have some flower girls called Bandari, Kariobangi Sharks and Mathare United who are perennial pace makers but create the way for Gor Biro.

But even as we continue dominating the local league like Celtic does in Scotland, Barcelona in Spain, Galatasaray in Turkey, we must now start looking beyond the KPL.

This year, we reached the quarter-finals of the second tier Confederation of Africa Football championships after being relegated from the main competition, the Champions League. We lost at that level because of our internal disorganisation.

Now, our challenge is to reach the knockout stage of the Africa Champions League. We are ranked among the top 20 in Africa and there is no reason why we should not be going for the main title.

Now that we are on a recess, we must recruit the best players and ensure we retain our best to launch another assault on the Africa Champions League. We believe we can win it.
