Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja says he will work closely with the new Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to restore order and security in Nairobi.
Through his Twitter account, Sakaja says he has already spoken to Koome who took oath of office early Friday on possible areas of collaboration targeted at beefing up security within the county.
“Just spoken to the new Inspector General of Police. We have agreed to meet and share solutions and tasks in restoring order and security in Nairobi,” says Sakaja who once served as Nairobi County Senator.
“Security may be a National Function but it’s our shared responsibility. We will support our officers as they protect our people,” concludes the message on his Twitter account.
His sentiments come at a time there has been a wave of insecurity cases within the capital with many being mugged in broad daylight in particular within the crowded Central Business District.
Cases of lawlessness have also been widespread along the Southern Bypass.
Only two days ago, officers on high alert drawn from Akila police station in collaboration with rangers from the Kenya Wildlife Service arrested a 15 year-old boy inside the Nairobi National Park amid heightened crackdown against criminal gangs.
This followed a 6-kimometre chase along the Southern Bypass after the teenager jumped into the park to evade arrest.
The boy who the officers disclosed is from Kibra’s Lindi area is later said to have led officers to a spot close to Wilson Airport where a knife he uses to stab victims before taking off with their valuables was recovered.
With Sakaja promising to work closely with the new Inspector General who has also promised to crack the whip on criminal elements, many city dwellers will be hoping that such partnerships will spare them the agony meted on them by runaway criminal elements not only within the CBD but also Nairobi County at large.
